It’s not all about hot air. Some of the demonstrations may feature horse-powered and gas-powered equipment, bringing back memories for some of the older visitors and learning opportunities for the younger set.
The history of Iowa’s farms will be on display on Sept. 10-11 at Carsten’s 1880’s Farmstead during the 40th annual Carstens Farm Days.
Demonstrations will showcase threshing, sawmilling, and of course, tractors, along with craftors and vendors of all kinds.
But there will be hot air – stean engines that power antique threshing machines, antique cars, trucks and other machinery will be on display along with a parade and entertainment.
Over 200 restored antique tractors will be on hand along with the buildings there, and don’t miss the food.
On Friday night there will be a pulled pork sandwich dinner put on by the Friends of the Shelby Stone Arch Trail committee from 5-7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, start the day off right with breakfast starting at 6:30 a.m. Snack and lunch options provided by Smokehouse Catering of Minden. Other local non-profit groups will offer refreshments through out the weekend.
On Saturday starting at 5:30 p.m. there will be Staley’s chicken dinner down on the farm. It’s $15 for adults and $10 for kids, age 8 and under. Proceeds go towards on-going maintenance at Carstens 1880 Farmstead.

This year Case and Case IH tractors and equipment will be featured during Farm Days. The company has produced tractors, engines and farm implements from the 1880’s to the present, and owners are invited to bring their exhibits to display during the weekend.
Horsepower-testing, sawmill operations and field demonstrations will occupy tractor exhibitors all day. Over 250 pieces of vintage equipment were on display during the 2021 Farm Days show. Visitors will enjoy watching most of the restored tractors as they go through the parade each afternoon at 2 p.m.
A quieter but no less colorful display will take place at the special event building – a display of quilts, wall hangings, wearable art and more. Over 50 crafters will be there with items that range from hand-made to home raised and more, a little something for everyone. And for those who like the farmstead’s farm grown potatoes, a very healthy crop is expected this year.
Don’t miss Sunday worship, a non-denominational service will take place at 9 a.m. on the law in front of the Carstens Home, led by the Shelby United Methodist Church.
